Andrew S. Koons is a native of Muncie, Indiana and attended local schools. He is one in a family of ten children. This young artist finds a certain "peace" in photography and has loved it since childhood.

Most of his childhood summers were spent in the Smoky Mountains where he discovered the beauty of these mountains early on. It is Andrew's love of the natural wonders and of the historic value of the "Smokies" that are featured in his photographs selected for this exhibit.

We hope you make plans to join us for "Nature at its best in the Smokies" December 2-31, 2010.

An opening reception will be held Thursday December 2, 2010 from 5-9pm. It is free and open to the public.

Local artist Ana Maria Pichardo will exhibit her artwork in a one woman show entitled"Mi Quisqueya" October 7-30. An opening reception will be held during ArtsWalk October 7th from 5-9pm. Ms. Pichardo was a recipient of a 2010 Teacher Creativity Grant from the Lilly Endowment and used it for a journey in self-discovery of her cultural heritage which has been such a strong influence in her life. Make plans to visit the Dominican Republic through the lens of her camera.

"Family of Curiosities 3"

Caitlin Lynch is the featured artist for July at the Artist Within. Her one-artist show entitled
"Auto.Bio.Graphical" opens First Thursday, July 1 with an artist reception from 5-8pm. The reception is free and open to the public.
Ms. Lynch explores a variety of drawing and painting mediums and has a series done in coffee stains and watercolors. A recent BFA graduate of Ball State University, Cat grew up in the Munci/Yorktown area . She states that "just making things" goes back as far as she can remember and lists the artists who have most influenced her work as: painters William DeKooning and Mark Rothko as well as sculptors Eva Hesse and Ann Hamilton. The title of her show, "Auto.Bio.Graphical" refers to a common thread that runs throughout her work:
"Auto- as in about me", "Bio.-as in all narratives coming from my life" and "Graphical.-because each piece is contains illustrative elements"
Cat Lynch states ,"Inspiration comes from everywhere-philosophy, pulp novels, candy wrappers or even a funny phrase or song that gets stuck in my head."

June exhibit: "Advanced Art"

"Advanced Art" an exhibit of artwork created by high school art students from Muncie Central and Muncie Southside. Art instructors Ana Maria Delk, Helen Zacek and Britt Husman have chosen the "best of the best" for this exhibit. Drawings, paintings, oil pastels, acrylics, ceramics, sculpture, jewelry and mixed media will be on display and for sale during the month long show.

An opening reception is scheduled for "First Thursday" June 3rd from 5-8 pm. The reception is open to the public and will offer light refreshments and the opportunity to meet and visit with the young artists. The work remains on exhibit through June 26th.

April at the Artist Within:
April starts off with the "Member Artists Grand Opening". As some of you may have already heard, the tough economic times have hit the Arts District Downtown. ArtWorks, our beautiful co-op on the corner of Walnut and Adams, is leaving. We are truly sad to lose this longtime anchor for the arts. We at the Artist Within have invited several of the co-op artists to form a group of "Member Artists" to exhibit and sell their artwork at the Artist Within. This core group of "Member Artists" will be offering classes in a wide variety of studio areas, as well as providing demonstrations during special events and openings.
Please make plans to stop by during our opening reception on First Thursday April 1st from 5-8pm to meet and greet our new "Member Artists" and check out the new work for sale at the Artist Within.

March Artist: Earl Dunbar

March at the Artist Within will feature "Spontaneous Reflections" an exhibit of photography by local artist Earl Dunbar. Originally from Green Bay, Wisconsin, Mr. Dunbar migrated to Muncie to be closer to his grandchildren. He remembers taking pictures as a child with his very own "Brownie". His interest in photography continued and he recalls packing his camera whenever he hit the road as a traveling salesman. Nature, animals, sunrises and sunsets were often the subjects as he would stop along the road. "Everything was a picture opportunity to me" states Earl. When he and his wife Penny owned a "Bed and Breakfast" there never seemed to be enough time to really concentrate on the art of photography. With every vacation, family get together or just a ride in the car, the camera was with him. He has been shooting digitally since 2001 and has since purchased 2 additional cameras, a computer and printer. This was when the real fun began. Having received many compliments and much encouragement as he shared captured memories with friends and family, this photographer is ready to share his artwork with the public. Opportunity knocks…will others like what he does, smile with their memories and take a chance on a newcomer making memories together? Earl Dunbar has chosen an interesting assortment of subjects for the work in this show and hopes they conjure up memories for you. His photographs will remain on display through March 27, 2010; framed and loose work will be for sale as well as custom ordered prints.
An opening reception will be held for the artist on First Thursday March 4, 2010 from 5-8pm.
Light refreshments will be served and the reception is free and open to the public. Please make plans to meet Mr. Dunbar and visit the other Downtown Galleries that evening.

February Artist Mark Townsend

"Short Transparencies in Watercolor", paintings by local artist
David Mark Townsend, will be the featured exhibit for February at the Artist Within.
An opening reception for the artist will be held from 5-8pm on Thursday, February 4th;
the reception is free and open to the public.
Mark's fascination with light and transparency is evident in his work. He received his BFA from the University of Tulsa, Tulsa Oklahoma in 1977 with a concentration in commercial art. He has worked and traveled throughout the Midwest and into Oregon and has actively participated in Baha'i pilgrimages and musical teaching trips to Israel, the Caribbean, and the Soviet Union. This artist also works in acrylics and tempera and enjoys animation and doing calligraphy. He is currently doing screen-printing with
Outfitter Apparel and lives in Dunkirk with his wife Nancy, a native of Parker City.
